A: Depending on the size of the project, a tub and shower stall are generally $300 - $500, depending on the extent of the previous failure of the original caulking and its removal, mold remediation, and if the whole surround needs to be re-caulked.

Q: How long does it take to re-caulk my bathroom?

Q: What is the difference between caulk and silicone sealant?

 

A: Ed of GottaGuy Services, based in Petaluma, CA states latex caulk is good for filling in gaps around baseboards, trim and molding. Ed also recommends silicone sealant is recommended for bathrooms and sinks due to its elastic properties, resistance to mold, and durability. 

 

Q: Can I caulk over old caulk?

 

The best answer is “No”. Old caulk is usually dried and cracked, and less adhesive, allowing mold to grow. Caulking over old caulk will fail as a result.

 

Q: How long do I have to wait before the caulk gets wet or I can paint it?

 

A: Generally for fast drying acrylic caulk, 30 - 40 minutes waiting time will work for painting. It will be fully cured in 24 hours. Silicone sealant for tubs, showers and sinks, it is recommended to allow for 12-24 hours curing time before being water-ready.

 

Q: How often should I replace caulk?

 

A: It is recommended inspecting and re-caulking roughly every 3-5 years. If cracks or gaps appear, it should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent mold growth or exposure to moisture which can cause warping and rotting in trim.

 

Q: What type of caulk do I need for my project?

 

A: Silicone sealant works best for bathrooms and kitchens as it is generally mold-resistant and durable.

 

Acrylic latex caulk is recommended for interior molding, casings and trim that is flexible and can be painted.

 

Exterior polyurethane or siliconized acrylic is the best choice for Exterior windows and doors as it is weather and UV resistant.
